An e-mail I just sent to the City Commission of Largo, FL (contact them here):
Dear sirs and madams:
I was shocked and saddened today to learn about the recent dismissal of City Commissioner Steve Stanton, a decision that appears to have been made purely because he intends to switch genders. I was born and raised in the Tampa Bay area, and I adore it, but chose to move to New York City to pursue professional opportunities; as my career has developed, I've been able to consider returning to my hometown. But it's behavior like this, and other associated bigotry like Florida's profoundly anti-gay adoption laws, that keep young native Floridians like myself from considering the state to be an acceptable place to live. Frankly, the only reason I would consider returning to Florida is to be able to vote people like the majority of you out of office for reprehensible behavior like this. Those of you on the commission who voted to remove Mr. Stanton should be ashamed of yourselves -- though Ms. Gerard and Mr. Woods, I salute your stand.
Sincerely,
-Chris Conroy

I wish I could live in Florida, I honestly do, but my ethics prevent me from allowing my tax dollars to fund bullshit like this. Thanks to Rachel for the heads-up on this.
Comment on the NY Times Business Section article “Gay M.B.A. Students Make Strides on Wall Street”:

Alright, to be fair, the speaker is not a native English speaker (or so it would seem). But I simply had to record this. It was too good not to.
Also, I obviously need to quit my personally fulfilling job and go back to soulless business school. Maybe I'd want to put a gun in my mouth but OMG THE MONEY, SON. THE MONEY.
Tell us a little something about your first girlfriend/boyfriend.
Hmm. Lord knows I don't really need to drive yet another "secret" blog into the ground by blathering about this topic again, since it's been pretty well exhausted in the past. But: His name was Josh; we met through a mutual friend in college. We were together for two years, then split for seven months, then together again for five months, and then it was over. He was born in Virginia, but grew up all over the world -- Colombia, South Africa, Ecuador (his father was a diplomat and his mother was Colombian). He was smart, he was funny, he was supremely egotistical and self-aggrandizing in ways he was both aware of and not aware of, and he was as stubborn as a fucking mule about every god-damn thing -- but of course, he blamed me for making every conversation into a confrontation, when really it was his insecurities that made any statement that didn't jibe with his worldview into a personal attack. He was kind of gawky and most people wouldn't consider him traditionally hot, but God knows that I fell for him hard.
And yeah, I'm still not over him. We're friends now, and we see each other fairly regularly and always have a good time, and we're getting to be more comfortable around each other (we've discussed guys we've dated, and are tentatively dipping our toes into discussing our sex lives)... but whenever we hang out, I still think about how nice it would be if we could be together, just like this, but instead of sitting in silence with him on the train I could have my arm around him, and at the end of the night, we could go home together instead of walking our separate ways, only seven blocks but the rest of our lives apart.
